ode to goth:
...
after a spiralling descent into bjork's discography, and a long - lived and deep seated love for 1980's goth and post punk, i have had an idea.
i have always found that goth music has had a particularly feminine nature to it, in the same way that gothic literature has always had. the pioneers of goth have always seemed to be women, like siouxsie sioux, or emily bronte, or bjork, or mary shelley...
even in the examples of prolific male bands like joy division or bauhaus, they always seem to draw upon female images, taking the names of the conentration camp brothels in house of dolls, or the design school that celebrated the craftwork of women. many of the songs of male bands (in the examples i have available to me that are locally stored on my phone...) either draw on women (like shes in parties or shes lost control), or on "typically" feminine things like (love like blood, love will tear us apart).
i fell in love with bjork's earlier work with the elgar sisters (sidasta eg), K.U.K.L (still need to listen to to find my fave) and tappi tikkerass (lok lud + ottar)... she brings a particularly feminine mysticism to goth and post punk that i really love in the genre. there is a sense of magic and quiet introspection in women fronted goth / postpunk bands along side a sense of sadness that i find most effective on my soul...
